Motivation

Fallstudie
Um Jake zu verstehen, muss man mehrere häufige und einige bizarre psychologische Phänomene verstehen. Die häufigsten sind Projektion und kognitive Dissonanz. Die bizarren sind Apotemnophilie, Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID) und Akrotomophilie.
Kognitive Dissonanz (Paradigma der freien Gedanken)
Die Person, die den Glauben vertritt, muss sich diesem verpflichtet haben; das heißt, sie muss für ihren Glauben eine wichtige Handlung ausgeführt haben, die nur schwer rückgängig gemacht werden kann. Generell gilt: Je wichtiger solche Handlungen sind und je schwieriger sie rückgängig gemacht werden können, desto stärker ist die Hingabe der Person an ihren Glauben.[2]
Dieses Phänomen wurde umfassend dokumentiert. Wenn eine wichtige Entscheidung getroffen wird, bewerten die Leute das Endergebnis höher, als wenn sie die Entscheidung nicht getroffen hätten.
Mithilfe des Paradigmas der freien Wahl und einer Magnetresonanztomographie (MRT) zeigten Sharot und Kollegen, dass sich nach einer Wahl die Aktivität im Striatum ändert und die neue Bewertung des gewählten Objekts widerspiegelt. Sie nimmt zu, wenn das Objekt gewählt wurde, und ab, wenn es abgelehnt wurde.[3] Nachfolgende Studien haben diese Ergebnisse weitgehend bestätigt.[4][5] Mit anderen Worten: Die Menschen sind tatsächlich darauf programmiert, so zu denken.
In einem anderen Experiment, das von Jack Brehm durchgeführt wurde,[6] bewerteten 225 Studentinnen eine Reihe gängiger Haushaltsgeräte und durften sich dann eines von zwei Haushaltsgeräten aussuchen, die sie als Geschenk mit nach Hause nehmen wollten. Eine zweite Bewertungsrunde zeigte, dass die Teilnehmerinnen ihre Bewertung des ausgewählten Gegenstands erhöhten und die Bewertung des abgelehnten Gegenstands verringerten. Dies kann mit kognitiver Dissonanz erklärt werden. Wenn man eine schwierige Entscheidung trifft, gibt es immer Aspekte der abgelehnten Wahl, die man ansprechend findet und diese Merkmale sind dissonant mit der Wahl eines anderen Gegenstands.
Dissonanz entsteht, wenn sich Personen freiwillig auf eine unangenehme Aktivität einlassen, um ein gewünschtes Ziel zu erreichen. Dissonanz kann reduziert werden, indem man die Attraktivität des Ziels übertreibt. Aronson & Mills[7] ließen die Teilnehmer eine schwere oder leichte „Initiation“ durchlaufen, um Mitglied einer Gruppe zu werden. Im Zustand der schweren Initiation nahmen die Teilnehmer an einer peinlichen Aktivität teil. Die Gruppe erwies sich als sehr langweilig und öde. Die Teilnehmer im Zustand der schweren Initiation bewerteten die Gruppe als interessanter als die Teilnehmer im Zustand der leichten Initiation.

Kognitive Dissonanz in Bezug auf Jake
Der Fall Jake: Jake wünschte sich viele Jahre lang, er wäre beschnitten worden, er recherchierte tonnenweise über Beschneidung, und dann kaufte er sich eine Beschneidung und ließ sich beschneiden, und dann war da noch der Heilungsprozess. All diese aufwendigen Anstrengungen und Rituale erhöhen das investierte Interesse, das verteidigt werden muss. Je mehr Zeit Sie für das Produkt aufwenden, das Sie bauen, je mehr Recherche Sie für eine Aktion aufwenden, die Sie gerade durchführen, je mehr Zeit Sie in eine solche Angelegenheit investieren, desto irreversibler ist die Entscheidung, desto mehr überschätzen Sie den Wert Ihrer endgültigen Wahl. Und folglich werden Sie anfälliger für stärkere Gefühle kognitiver Dissonanz. Menschen wie Jake werden höchstwahrscheinlich dauerhafte und starke Gefühle kognitiver Dissonanz erleben. Jake ist in all diesen Kategorien ein Extrem.

Hier ist Jakes Paradigma der freien Entscheidung. Er wollte beschnitten werden und hatte sich bereits über die Folgen entschieden, bevor er sie erlebte. Das ist die genaue Definition des Paradigmas der freien Meinungsäußerung. Er hatte sein Leben damit verbracht, sein Ziel, beschnitten zu werden, auszuschmücken.
Dissonanz entsteht, wenn Menschen mit Informationen konfrontiert werden, die nicht mit ihren Überzeugungen übereinstimmen. Wenn die Dissonanz nicht durch eine Änderung der eigenen Überzeugungen verringert wird, kann sie zu einer Fehlwahrnehmung oder Ablehnung oder Widerlegung der Informationen führen. Außerdem sucht man Unterstützung bei anderen, die die gleichen Überzeugungen teilen, und versucht, andere davon zu überzeugen, die Übereinstimmung wiederherzustellen.[2]

Wenn der Gläubige jedoch Mitglied einer Gruppe überzeugter Personen ist, die sich gegenseitig unterstützen können, kann sein Glaube aufrechterhalten werden und die Gläubigen können versuchen, Nichtmitglieder zu bekehren oder davon zu überzeugen, dass der Glaube richtig ist.[2]

Projektion
Psychologische Projektion oder Projektionsverzerrung ist ein psychologischer Abwehrmechanismus, bei dem eine Person unbewusst ihre eigenen Eigenschaften, Gedanken und Emotionen verleugnet und diese dann der Außenwelt, beispielsweise anderen Menschen, zuschreibt. Bei der Projektion geht es also darum, sich vorzustellen oder zu projizieren, dass andere diese Gefühle haben.[10]

Seine persönliche Fantasie ist, schon als Säugling beschnitten worden zu sein.

Darüber hinaus nutzt er fehlerbehaftete Internetumfragen und Studien, um seine Prognose zu begründen.[11][12][13] Einige dieser anonymen Internetumfragen und Studien kommen zu dem Schluss, dass intakte Männer die Beschneidung wünschen und dass beschnittene Männer zufrieden sind. Allerdings wurde nur eine Studie, die er heranzieht, tatsächlich in einer von Experten begutachteten Zeitschrift veröffentlicht und sie ergab, dass die Menschen sich alarmierend häufig über ihren eigenen Beschneidungsstatus irrten.[14] Dies macht die Ergebnisse der Selbstauskunft zweifelhaft. Darüber hinaus werden intakte Männer in den USA, wo die Mehrheit der Bevölkerung beschnitten ist, typischerweise als Außenseiter dargestellt. Einige Studienteilnehmer berichteten von einer Verbesserung.[17] Eine weitere Studie stammte aus Afrika, wo die dortigen Sexualpraktiken überhaupt keine Ähnlichkeit mit den Sexualpraktiken in den USA aufweisen.[18] Auf jeden Fall ist es falsch, solche Studien zur Rationalisierung einer Projektion heranzuziehen, denn wie ich oben im Abschnitt zur kognitiven Dissonanz erläutert habe, sind menschliche Tiere darauf programmiert, den Wert ihrer endgültigen Entscheidung zu überbewerten und gleichzeitig den Aufwand zu rationalisieren, der nötig war, um als Erwachsener unwiderruflich beschnitten zu werden.
Jake verwendet anschließend eine weitere Studie zur Selbsteinschätzung, um die Empfindlichkeit der Vorhaut zu bestimmen.[19] Doch wie bereits erwähnt, sind die Menschen nicht einmal in der Lage, ihren eigenen Beschneidungsstatus zu bestimmen, geschweige denn die fünf Bestandteile der Vorhaut und ihre Empfindlichkeit.
Auf jeden Fall hat Jake das Internet nach allen Informationen durchforstet, ob fehlerhaft oder nicht, die er brauchte, um seine Prognosen zu begründen.
Apotemnophilie
Jake könnte auch an diesen Störungen leiden.
Apotemnophilie iist eine neurologische Störung, bei der ansonsten geistig gesunde und rationale Personen einen starken und spezifischen Wunsch nach der Amputation eines oder mehrerer gesunder Körperteile äußern.[20] Oft besteht auch ein sexuelles Interesse an einer Amputation.[21]
Einer seiner Kollegen sagte: „Einige von uns finden nicht nur am Endprodukt, sondern auch an der Prozedur selbst erotische und sexuelle Befriedigung.“
Das „Endprodukt“ ist das sexuelle Interesse an der Amputation und die „Prozedur selbst“ ähnelt dem IKEA-Effekt, der zuvor besprochen wurde.
Identitätsstörung der Körperintegrität (BIID)
Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), früher bekannt als Amputierten-Identitätsstörung, ist eine neurologische und psychologische Störung, die den Betroffenen das Gefühl vermittelt, sie wären glücklicher, wenn sie amputiert wären. Sie geht typischerweise mit dem Wunsch einher, ein oder mehrere gesunde Gliedmaßen zu amputieren, um dieses Ziel zu erreichen.[22]
Akrotomophilie
Akrotomophilie bezieht sich auf eine Paraphilie, bei der eine Person starkes sexuelles Interesse an Amputierten zeigt.[23]
