Völkermord is the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group.

Genocide Convention

After the abuses of World War II, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Genocide Convention on 9 December 1948 by Resolution 260A (III). The Convention defines genocide and makes it a crime.

Article II of the Convention defines genocide as:

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

(a) Killing members of the group;

(b) Vorlage:Highlighting

(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

International Criminal Court

The International Criminal Court, which sits at The Hague in the Netherlands, has authority to try persons charged with genocide.
